Subject:

Opposition to History and Social Studies TEKS

Body:

Dear SBOE Chair, Vice Chair, and SBOE Board Members,

As an elected representative with direct influence on Texas education, I implore you to abandon the proposed draft History/Social Studies TEKS and adopt the K-8 Enhanced TEKS.

In just the First Reading, the workgroups’ content (D, in particular) reveals an alarming globalist push on Texas and U.S. History, while ignoring key foundational documents, enduring principles and pivotal and heroic people who shaped our great state and nation. It is unconscionable to replace them with race, power and privilege, and grievance-based historical-revisionism. The proposals are a direct violation of existing Texas law (HB 3979, 87th) and they violate the purpose of providing a free and public education according to Article 7, Section 1 of the Texas Constitution.

Abandoning Texas history in 4th grade is unacceptable. We need more, not less, Texas history.

Teaching very young children comparative cultures, worldviews and religions while ignoring the catastrophic faults of communism and its incalculable death toll throughout history is unacceptable.

Teaching any form of collectivist worldview that prioritizes community values over the sovereignty of a family’s values in a child’s upbringing is a violation of the stabilizing cultural influence of a family, and is not acceptable.

Erasing the people, events and impacts (e.g. Moses, “The Law Giver”) that are core to understanding a monotheistic belief system and Judeo-Christianity’s impact on the development of human civilization over the course of history is unacceptable. Removing this erases the roots of the profound respect for the rule of law we have always cherished in the United States. We must preserve that ideal.

Do not sell out Texas students to international bidders. It is a shame to see multiple full-time, paid staffers from various cultural groups lobbying the SBOE for inclusion in the TEKS. They are no different than the Chinese Confucius Institutes and you must not allow foreign interests to assert their influence on our state’s education system in violation of the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Only 44% of Texas high school juniors ”mastered” the STAAR U.S. History exam, requiring only that 79% of the questions be answered correctly (TEA Data). We are failing students.

As a Texas citizen, I demand the preservation of our state and national history, not a re-writing of them. This is not the time to “swap deck chairs on the Titanic.” We have a legitimate S.O.S. in Texas Education. We must stop the globalist encroachment as a first step toward saving our ship.

Chairman Ellis MUST SLOW DOWN and STOP FAST-TRACKING this process. It is capricious, irresponsible and limits the due diligence. The only directions that make sense right now are:

1) Return to the 2009 TEKS suggested by David Barton (K-8 Enhanced TEKS), and revise only what is new, or that which needs to be aligned with recently passed legislation, and

2) minimize the number of TEKS that teachers are tasked with, so students can learn thoroughly and are better able to MASTER the required content.

REJECT THE CURRENT REVISION OF THE HISTORY/SOCIAL STUDIES TEKS OR EXPECT A MASS EXODUS OF STUDENTS, THE LIKES OF WHICH TEXAS HAS NEVER SEEN, IF YOU PERSIST IN THIS MADNESS!
